Understanding Multiplexer: The Smart Selector

A Multiplexer (often called MUX) is an important digital electronic device used in communication systems and computer design. Simply put, a Multiplexer works like a smart switch — it selects one input from multiple data inputs and sends it to a single output line. This makes it very useful when we want to transmit large amounts of data efficiently.

The number of inputs in a Multiplexer can be 2, 4, 8, 16, or more, but the output is always just one line. To decide which input will go to the output, control signals (also called selection lines) are used. For example, a 4-to-1 Multiplexer has 4 input lines, 1 output line, and 2 control signals.
